PROGRAM CURRICULUM DESCRIPTION
Curriculum Highlights
The following program curriculum is used to create a sense of willingness, desire and thirst for knowledge and control over one’s life. Program graduates have a 78% possibility of permanent stability and sobriety per the statistics of our programs over the past 17 years. Program is delivered in three-hour sessions, three-five times weekly.
Tutoring/Literacy Services WLC conducts baseline reading and math levels of students via WRAT testing and personal interviews during the initial, intermediate and ending stages of the program. Tutors work with the students to improve basic learning and reading skills. Learning in small groups advances student improvement in school performance and reading rates.
Reading Stars Phonics Program was developed by Smart Way Reading and is based upon the National Reading Panels recommendations of what is needed in a comprehensive reading and phonics program in order to provide the greatest level of success in teaching reading. Our students realize an average of 2.5 grade levels increase in their reading in 6 weeks time while doing this program.
The Learning Improvement Course Students learn about the barriers to studying, and how they can overcome them; gives the student the ability to study any subject and retain knowledge along with the ability to recognize and overcome barriers to study and learning. Barriers include having to learn when there is:
Lack of mass (2) Too steep a gradient (3) and a misunderstood word.
The Effective Communication Course, extroverts the student and gets him into better communication with others and with the environment. This course teaches invaluable communication tools empowering the student with the ability to convey the thoughts and ideas he needs to and the discipline and awareness to withhold those thoughts he need not express. The course also teaches the student the value of allowing another to safely communicate their thoughts and responses.
Life Skills/Esteem Building Education: WLC provides education including: coping skills for stress, anger management, learning strategies, positive decision-making and self-esteem.
Counseling: Students and family members discover the underlying reasons the student is not succeeding in life such as family problems, neglect (lack of food or clothing) transportation, learning disabilities, poor self-esteem, and anger management issues) and counselors work individually with the youth and family to remove these barriers through counseling and appropriate therapies delivered through our courses and Detoxification program.
WLC provides similar services to parents of the students, to provide a more holistic and comprehensive service delivery approach.
