January 19 th, 2008 marks World Literacy Crusade’s 16 th Annual Celebrity Salute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s event honors Young Urban Heroes, “Heroes from the Hood”, in keeping with Dr. King’s legacy of education and honor of youth. This year WLC recognizes the many young humanitarians born of the inner cities through awards and scholarships.

The events begin with the launching of LA CARES 4 Kids, the Los Angeles branch of Essence Cares. Essence Cares is a national movement to recruit 1 million mentors for vulnerable youth across this country. The Essence Cares movement was founded last year by Editor in Chief of Essence Magazine, Ms. Susan Taylor. The LA CARES 4 Kids launch takes place from 11 – 3 PM and is followed by WLC’s “Heroes of the Hood” awards ceremony and concert headlined by Hip Hop legend Doug E. Fresh!

The “Heroes of Hood” event kicks off with a VIP reception at 5pm, the concert and awards ceremony at 7pm and ends at 9pm. There is a VIP post reception following the concert. The events are being held at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center located in the heart of Los Angeles at 4718 W. Washington Blvd

This event is WLC’s signature fund raiser and has been supported by many artists in past including Steven Seagal, Chaka Khan, Maxwell, Edward James Olmos, Isaac Hayes, Lisa Marie Presley and the list continues of noted personalities who have come out to show honor to Dr. King and to support the children on WLC programs.
