A Call to Action for One Million Mentors!

LA CARES 4 Kids is the Los Angeles arm of ESSENCE CARES, an exciting mentoring initiative founded by Susan Taylor, Editorial Director of Essence Magazine and highlighted on the Oprah Winfrey Show on May 31 st and again on June 29 th, 2007.

On January 19, 2008 in conjunction with World Literacy Crusade’s 16 th Annual Celebrity Salute to Dr. Martin Luther King, LA CARES 4 Kids will hold a press conference launching the Essence Cares initiative in Los Angeles!

The event begins at 1pm at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center located at 4718 Washington blvd Los Angeles, http://nhpac.com/index.html and culminates with a VIP reception.

“With all of us standing together, linking arms and aims, we will create a new future for the many vulnerable African-American children,” said Susan Taylor.

ESSENCE CARES is a call to action for every able Black adult to take under wing a vulnerable young person, which costs nothing. The call simply asks us to join a trusted mentoring organization in our community or gather a number of friends and, together, mentor a group of at-risk youngsters. All it takes is love and a little time to open the gates to success for our disenfranchised children. If you would like to be among the committed men and women in your community who are leading change, we ask that you join them in working on the most important task that will define the future of our children, community and country: turning failing schools into safe, supportive, top-tier learning environments with culturally relevant curricula.
