Heroes from the Hood

A Hero from the Hood is defined as someone who comes from the inner city and participates in exemplary community service.

The World Literacy Crusade is honoring Heroes From the Hood at its 16 th Annual Celebrity Salute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 19 th of January. We are in search of youth 10 – 18 years old who are doing incredible humanitarian work in their communities. Examples of this work could be:

Conducting drug education seminars in their local schools and churches

Reaching out to the elderly on a regular basis by reading to the residents of a senior center or visiting the shut in to bring them food and other necessities

Tutoring other kids after school

Working to clean graffiti or the beaches on the weekends

Working to get homeless animals adopted

Feeding the homeless

Do you have youth in your program, church, school or neighborhood who are exemplary humanitarians? Would you like to nominate them for a “Heroes From the Hood” award? Don’t delay. There are only 5 slots remaining. Act today and nominate a future leader!

All applications MUST be received in the WLC offices by 5pm December 10 th 2007. Applications must be complete with required attachments or will be returned. See nomination form for requirements.
